I’m sure we have all at one time or another have made a Pros and Cons list when we are trying to make an important decision on something. Our decision is typically made when one of those columns has more on one side than the other. From my experiences in doing these they have never been difficult to do because they have always been involved other factors into my decision making: family, friends, co-workers, the job itself, etc.
Now whether we like it or not we all have our shortcomings. At the same time we also have our strengths to offer the world. The question is have you ever taken the moment to make a list of what each of these are? If not, you might want to. If and if you I’d like to suggest that the left side of your column be titled “Shortcomings” and the right side of your column be titled “Strengths/Gifts.” You may be asking why am I having you list them in this particular way?
We often have the tendency to start with the positive and end with the negative. Think back to past pros and cons lists you have made over the years. I’m sure they were always set up the same way and never a cons then a pros list. By listing your shortcomings first you will be acknowledging them and it will serve as your acceptance of them. This does not mean you have to like it or that you cannot ever change them; it’s just accepting them for the time being. Then list your strengths/gifts and what you know to be true that stand out as being that set of skills and talents that you offer others to make this world a better place. These do not have to counteract each of those shortcomings you had previously listed in the other column. That is not its purpose. Its purpose is to realize that those strengths/gifts far outweigh the shortcomings we mat think we have. As Gary Vaynerchuk says in today’s quote the moment we accept our shortcomings and bet entirely on our strengths, things will change. We just need to trust the process and tht includes trusting ourselves.
