Our Moral Compass: Equality in Education + Equal Opportunities = An Equal Society

“Until we get equality in education, we won’t have an equal society.”

-Sonia Sotomayer

Equality. The state of being equal, especially equal in status, rights and opportunities. I believe that if we create structures that allow for everyone to have an equal education that mirrors and prepare for those same equal opportunities in the workforce then we will truly have an equal society. As society and the rules changes in one of those factions so should it occur in the other. They should be forever interconnected. For far too long attempts for equality have been developed in isolation and “the two worlds” have not (and still have not in my opinion) taken the time to truly develop a systematic way for the two to build off of one another.

By no means do I think efforts are not being made. We are seeing examples of this through gender, socio-economic status, and ethnicity movements for those equality rights in education to be heard. Should we prevent others from receiving the same education as others because of their personal conditions or finances? Would we want this done to us? I think not. We need to appreciate the diversity of others and respect their beliefs. Respect does not mean we actually believe in the same things they do. It just means having the admiration of someone, not necessarily for what they believe in but for what they have done through their abilities, qualities or achievements. You see….this is what gets lost. So many times we can’t even reach that level of understanding because there is a tendency to judge at what is seen at the surface level and not is what is underneath.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr once said that we should not judge someone by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.  I would like to think if he were still alive today he would modify this by saying we should not judge someone by the color of their skin, gender or sexual preference but by the content of their character.

I know we are trying to do this within our educational system and within the workplace which is wonderful sight to see. It is my hope that as both entities continue to evolve for equal rights and that the pathway being made in education connects with the one being made in the workplace in order for the dream of a society that is one of equality is achieved. This, however, can only occur when we portray an empathetic heart and mindset.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
