“We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.”
Peace begins with me. There is so much truth behind these four simple words. This is a strategy we have taught our students at school to use in the event that someone or something upsets them. All they need to do is close their eyes and while simultaneously using both hands and tapping each finger to their thumb as they say each word-Peace-begins-with-me. This proves to be very effective in calming themselves down. I’d advise you to try it some time to see for yourself that it really does work and will leave with a much calmer mindset than before you started. Making sure you have that inner peace within ourselves sounds easy enough to do but it is often rarely done because much of attention is instead focused on attaining a level of peace with the outside world.
We need to continuously remind ourselves that we cannot control anything but ourselves. If we do not exhibit that inner peace how can we possibly hope to have peace with the outside world or expect others to do the same? It is that sense of self efficacy in believing that you are the one capable and are in control of executing the right behavior in any given situation or moment: in this case it is peace. Peace is showing mastery of self control and recognizing that true strength can truly occur when this is exhibits when stressful situations occur. If we would all stay true to this process this will help the desire to obtain peace with the outer world.
