“Remember this. Hold on to this. This is the only perfection there is, the perfection of helping others. This is the only thing we can do that has any lasting value or meaning. This is why we’re here.”
One of the true and everlasting qualities in developing solid relationship skills is through helping others. Today’s quote serves as an important reminder not only now but always. We as individuals try so hard to be perfect in all that we do and it is really something that is beyond our control. But when it comes to helping others, perfection, for whatever reason seems to be the most attainable. And why is that? Because it is not about us, it is about others. That is our true purpose.
What greater reward is there than helping others? Think back to times where you have helped another individual or organization whether it be carrying someone’s groceries to their car, participating in a 5K Run for Hunger or mowing your neighbor’s lawn. How did it make you feel? I know for myself when I have experienced things like these I have felt a lot of joy and pride in what I have been able to do for someone else. I’ve also been on the receiving end and have felt such a high level of appreciation and respect for those that have taken their time to go out of their way to help me.
This is also why I believe in servant leadership as this is the foundation for what this type of leadership really means: servicing others. No amount of money can ever hope to fill someone’s emotional bucket like helping others does. Relationships will continue to thrive when we help one another. Even if you cannot return to favor right at that moment to the person that helped you out, I’m sure there is someone else you know that maybe in need of having their bucket filled.
Look at what NBA basketball players like Zion Williamson and Kevin Love are doing for those that work the stadiums and arenas that have employees that will be out of work for next month. They are paying their salaries. No one asked them to do this. They made this decision on their own and aren’t asking for anything in return. I know that there are other people and other sport organizations that are following suit and it is great to see. Many organizations and people are helping out in other ways by having free webinars to help small businesses survive during their crisis while others are focusing on the mental aspect in providing resources for others to cope with things now and for the next several weeks.
Like Andre Agassi says by helping others creates lasting value or meaning. Just remember…..We are all in this together.
