“Humility is no substitute for a good personality.”
We all know that arrogance is not a very flattering trait and is definitely not something that could be used to describe someone as having a good personality. On the flip side humility is not a bad thing but should not serve like is said in today’s quote as a substitute for a good personality. Humility is a modest or low view of one’s own importance. Of course I’d go with the modest view versus the low view but it does, however, prevent us from becoming arrogant which if I had a choice between the two I’d choose humility any day of the week.
So what does it really mean to have a good personality? Better yet, what are those qualities that constitute a good personality? First it depends on what you believe are those qualities as they may differ from mine that I am about to share. I look at a good personality as the same qualities that make up our moral compass. They are one in the same.
Having an understanding and compassion for others means you are able to relate to others and have the ability to see things through their own lens. I believe in being honest and accountable for our actions (whether they are right or wrong), is something that people will respect in the long run. Being encouraging is a quality that is something that goes a long way to build the psyche of an individual or team struggling and I think by doing so brings out another important trait or quality to a good personality and this is reliability. Someone with a good personality should be someone that is there for others in good times and bad and can deliver when their number is called upon.
Lastly a person with a good personality is conscientious in all that they do and puts the needs of others before their own. It fosters a bond of trust with others. As you can see the list that I have compiled are just some qualities of a good personality that I focus on but there are a ton more. One of my most fondest memories was being selected by my Senior class in high school as having the Best Personality in our class along with Being the Best All Around. I’ll never forget my shock seeing that in our class newspaper along with all of the other Senior Superlatives voted on by the Senior class. I also felt blessed that my class thought of me in this light and I’ve tried to live up to those qualities they saw in me and hope that I continue to possess them today. What are the traits or qualities you look for in others or yourself that embody a good personality?
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
