“We ask justice, we ask equality, we ask that all the civil and political rights that belong to citizens of the United States be guaranteed to us and our daughters forever.”
-Susan B. Anthony
Believe or not in life we ask for a lot of things. Do we always get them? No. Are the things we are asking for more of a want versus a need? Yes. In today’s quote Susan B. Anthony, a women’s rights activist of the 19th century, asks for justice, equality and civil/political rights for women. At that time it was a need as was the same for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr for civil rights. Unfortunately, although both have improved we still have a long way to go.
The requests made by Susan B. Anthony is what all people, not matter, race, gender or creed should be afforded to: equal opportunity. Before we can even begin to appreciate their diversity we need to look within ourselves and decide that if this injustice was happening to us (and who knows it may still be directly affecting you now) how would we feel? This is where we utilize our empathetic nature and transfers it towards others and their just cause. Put yourself in the shoes of others that are still fighting for equal rights, justice and to be treated the same across the board.
If we are truly to live our lives the American Way this needs to be a guarantee for all.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
