Treat Others as You Want to Be Treated

“I am not impressed by money, social status, or job title. I am impressed by the way someone treats other human beings.”

The old adage has always been to treat others as you would like to be treated but I think this has been forgotten more often than not in these ever changing times. I’ve noticed over the years that how our children (and many adults) use social media platforms such as Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram or TikTok as more so of a social status check than anything else. Some try to emulate those that are famous thinking this will impress their peers and become more accepted into certain social group clicks. I caution those that follow this false sense of social status and value as it can lead to a lot of unnecessary conflict between our friends and those that are closest to us.  Be careful to not lose yourself in the process. We lose sight of the fact that social media should be used to celebrate our diversity, beliefs and serve more as a platform of inspiring and encouraging others.

Having lots of money can never replace the amount of happiness one may seek because that can only come from within. Happiness does not have a price tag and can never be bought. Money can provide a false sense of acceptance and who would want to live their lives as a fake?

Job titles have never and will never define me as to who I am. I have often told others, that in my current role as an Assistant Principal, is just that, a title and it is my actions behind this title is what ultimately matters. Actions speak louder than words. I pride myself in being empathetic towards others, in looking at things through their eyes and continuously strive to do my best to appreciate the beauty and diversity of all those that I encounter each and every day.

These three examples of social status, money and job titles are more about us and not about others. If we are ever able to improve ourselves and fill our social awareness buckets we need to focus on the well being of others. That is a true measure of success and something we should all strive towards in making this world a better place.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards strengthening your social awareness skills?
