Our Moral Compass: Wisdom Is Found Through Appreciation

“Nine-tenths of wisdom is appreciation. Go find somebody’s hand and squeeze it, while there’s still time.”

-Dale Dauten

Showing appreciation or signs of gratitude towards one another is a huge factor in strengthening any relationship. Remember wisdom is developed based on the quality of the experiences you have and the knowledge you gain from those experiences. The challenge does not always lie in the establishing of a relationship but rather in maintaining it over time.

Now I do want to preference that in today’s quote and based on the current happenings that we are experiencing, you would not need to find anyone’s hand and squeeze it. It is merely reminding you that time is short and it is important to tell family members, co workers and friends how much you appreciate their friendship. The most crucial aspect in telling them, is the why your appreciate them. Don’t you love when specific feedback is given to you as to the why someone feels the way about you, whether it is good or bad? I know I do because it affords me the opportunity to connect their feeling with my own, reflect on it and either continue to do something if it is positive or stop it if it is something negative.

We are currently facing challenges that will test us all and we need one another even while maintaining social distancing. I plan on calling co workers and writing postcards to check on their well being first and foremost and convey my sincere appreciation with all they are doing to support their students in these uncertain times. The hope is this will be paid forward as they do the same with their students or even with their co workers and family. Our relationship skills are being tested now more than ever and we need to face these challenges head on so we don’t go backwards in our relationship skills with others. We need to keep moving forward and showing our appreciation for one another is the way to go. Even starting a daily gratitude journal will help self regulate your own mindset and let you realize all of the things and people you are grateful for. We need to stay positive. By doing so our wisdom will continue to grow in more ways than one and self growth is what it is all about.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
