What You Should Not Base Your Decisions On

“Don’t base your decisions on the advice of those who don’t have to deal with the results.”

Often times when it comes to certain decisions we make in life, we lean on those around us to get their insights and opinions before coming to a decision. Sometimes this can be beneficial but it depends on what the decision is for and how steep the consequences may be it if it turns out to be the wrong decision. For example, getting advice on where to eat for dinner is not what I would consider a major decision. Besides, if the restaurant you went to turned out to not be as great a meal as you had hoped you would just learn from this experience and not go there again. No harm, no foul.

Now let’s say you are deciding on whether to lease or buy a car, what college to attend or whether to make a career change or not then this raises the decision making scale considerably because the stakes in the results are higher and much more costly. This doesn’t mean you should not still seek out the advice from others. I just caution you not to base your decisions solely on their opinions because if the results are bad, you will most likely blame them, which could potentially cause an unnecessary rift in your relationship. At the end of the day, you were the one to make the final decision, no one else. The blame rests on your shoulders.

You need to remember that when it comes down to it, you and only you will have to live with the results of the decision. By all means, weigh the pros and cons, do your research to see what “the experts” say online. But you need to own it. You own your decisions when they come out great don’t you? Well you have to do the same when they don’t. That’s called life and life is full of lessons. It is up to us to learn from them and  adjust our future decision making skills because there will always be more decisions to make.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards increasing your responsible decision making skills in your own life?
