“Life is a series of experiences, each one of which makes us bigger, even though it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and griefs which we endure help us in marching onward.”
The old adage is that everything in life happens for a reason. Sometimes the results seem to benefit us while other times not so much. What we need to realize and come to understanding on is that whether they are good or bad ones it is through these experiences that makes up this thing called life. Today’s quote by Henry Ford reminds us of this.
Our moral compass continues to evolve and develop through these experiences and they are occurring at such a rapid pace that it is hard for us to realize how each of those experiences do build on one another. They help make us who we are. As Henry Ford mentions the world was built to develop character and it these mental and moral qualities that affect our decision making, social awareness and the relationships we have with others, including ourselves.
When we learn from each of our experiences we grow. However the key is making sure that we are continuing to learn from them. Obviously when things are in our favor that builds our self-confidence in our abilities and helps us acquire new skills in either our work related or personal development skills, we improve. The challenge lies in when certain experiences result in setbacks or griefs you did not anticipate happening this is when you need to persevere and move forward.
We need to take the time to realize no matter hard and hurtful this experience is, that we will get through this bump in the road and it will make us a stronger person in the long run. This has to be an internal belief, a growth mindset. I’m not saying this was easy and I know I have and continue to have my struggles with this. We have to find the good in these experiences no matter how gloomy things may seem.
We can get through anything if we put our mind to it. If we never give it a chance and quit, what hope do we give others? What sort of role model would we be for our peers, our significant other, or our kids? Life is full of ups and downs but we all have a pause button (even though we may think ours is broken at time) to take a moment and think, “What is this experience trying to teach me about myself?” We just need to take the time to listen to ourselves and think things through. Just like we want to squeeze all the juice out of an orange in order to get a satisfying glass of orange juice, we want to squeeze everything out of each experience in order to live a fulfilling life. It is important for us to live in the moment and realize that each experience snowballs into developing into who we truly are.
As Ferris Bueller said in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, “Life moves pretty fast. If don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
