Our Moral Compass: Stay Grounded

“Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground.”

-Theodore Roosevelt

Casey Kasem, who was a famous American DJ, had a saying as he signed off each week after hosting the American Top 40: “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.” That catchphrase has been forever engrained in my head but to my surprise I had not idea that the originator of this this type of thinking was one of our former US Presidents, Theodore Roosevelt.

President Roosevelt’s quote as mentioned at the outset of today’s discussion is “Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground.” Again not exactly worded the same way but the message is essentially the same. The stars represent our goals, hopes and dreams. Whether is keeping your eyes on them or reaching for them, we are maintaining focus on that objective. The crucial thing behind it all is to make sure that this focus does not waver. This could not be more prevalent than in the times we are all facing right now.

Think of what your goals, hopes and dreams were and hopefully are during this time of uncertainty that we are all facing right now. Take a moment. Do you still have them at the forefront of your mind or have you already put these on the shelf along with the other forgotten/broken dreams you had put aside when life’s challenges got in your way? If you have, take them off that imaginary shelf and dust them off because we need to hold onto these goals, hope and dreams now more than ever.

These give us meaning. These give us direction. And most importantly they give us purpose. We cannot afford to lose any of those, otherwise we risk losing the most important thing: ourselves. It is the goal setting piece of self-management where we set those work related or personal goals for ourselves. Don’t lose that and please be mindful if you sense it slipping away.

The second part of today’s quote is reminding us to stay grounded while we keep our eyes on our goals, hopes and dreams. Our mind is used in a dual role in that it needs to be consciously aware that in order to maintain control they need to stay grounded in those thought while keeping their eyes on the prize so to speak. Your family and friends can also do this especially during this difficult time. My hope is that reading my daily messages for are also serving as that reminder to stay grounded as you continue to develop your moral compass. It’s a tall order to manage yourself let alone others in a time like this and it is my hope that this blog helps just a little bit in keeping yourself grounded while still maintaining your focus on what your life can truly become.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
