One of the most challenging and frustrating things we all experience are dealing with things that our outside our control. Case in point is what we are all going through with the current pandemic. We ourselves didn’t cause it but because of us needing to social distance we allow it to affect our well being. Some people are having feelings of isolation, loneliness and sadness while others are experience feelings of joy, hope and gratitude. So why can such a contrast occur?
Today’s quote provides us with the mental image that our minds are like ships and the water represents those outside factors that are beyond our control. Those factors, like the ocean, are constantly flowing and forever present, even though the tide may change. We are the captain of our own ship and we need to remember to take the precautionary measures to make sure that the water doesn’t get in our boat.
Just as a boat captain experiences many storms throughout their careers and have to adjust their sails in order to make it thorough to the other side in order to reach calmer waters, we do the same in controlling our emotions when handling certain situations that occur in our daily lives. In reference to the pandemic example, we had no control over what happened to us all in having to social distance ourselves but we do have control in how we are handling our emotions.
We cannot allow outside factors sink us. Is it hard, yes? Do we want thing like it was before, yes? There is no denying that but no matter how much we will things to go back to the way the were they won’t. We have to accept it. The challenge is what are we going to do about it. Do we allow feeling of despair and other negative emotions weight us down? Is that being productive? It is not. We need to recognize when water (negative thoughts) is entering our boats (our minds), and look for something to help scoop that water out to stay afloat. We need to use feelings of things we are grateful to help combat those negative thoughts. Our minds are our vessels. It is up to us to keep us afloat but if we need someone to throw us that life preserver, to help save our mental withitness, we need to reach out to them by sending that flair of despair in the sky. We owe that to ourselves in order to maintain our own sense of well being.
