Tear Down Your Walls

“People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.”

-Joseph F. Newton

Loneliness is a type of sadness we have all experienced at one time or another. The feeling of being empty inside, alone and unwanted can occur anywhere and at any time.  When this happens it causes us to put “imaginary walls” up which serve to protect us when we are feeling at our most vulnerable. The question we need to ask ourselves when this occurs is: Is this feeling of loneliness I’m experiencing attributed to true outside factors that are affecting me or is it due to my own interpretation of those factors that is causing me to feel this way?

Walls may protect us from the outside world but we when we build these we are essentially becoming prisoners of own environment. Remember we are the ones that built those walls in the first place and if we do not bring them down we may unknowingly shut out those that care about us most which will have an adverse affect on our relationships with them.

Now if we thought of building bridges instead, loneliness will become nonexistent and will have a much greater positive impact on yourself and others. These bridges serve as extensions of ourselves and our relationships will only continue to strengthen if we the time to continue fostering them. So the next time we are feeling a sense of loneliness beginning to creep in, we need to reach out to others for help in getting us get through whatever difficulties may lie ahead. Together is better than going and doing things alone.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing relationship skills in your own life?
