Welcome to the Our Moral Compass Podcast. It’s Within Us
“Because your own strength is unequal to the task, do not assume that it is beyond the powers of man; but if anything is within the powers and province of man, believe this is within your own compass also.”
We have often heard the saying “You are your own worst enemy.” The challenge lies in how we can turn this phrase around to instead read “You are your own best friend.” Our “powers” are limitless and when we are mindful of them can contribute to the continuous development of our own moral compass. Those powers include, but are not limited to self-love and self-control. Much like the airplane example that is often when deciding who should you use the oxygen mask on first (you or the person sitting next to you), it is important to know that we must take care of ourselves first before we can help others.
When it comes to being empathetic towards others you can sense when someone is not having one of their better days, you are, unknowingly, increasing your power of becoming more socially aware and really is a win-win. It not only makes you feel better to help someone in their time of need but the person’s own well being and sense of self worth increases. Better yet, while this is all occurring, it is also fostering the relationship skills (another power of yours) and the person you are interacting with at the same time. All of these powers can only increase when responsible decisions are being made along the way. Like electricity flowing through multiple circuits to a power grid, these powers interact with one another and together provide the energy necessary to make our moral compass thrive.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your moral compass?
