The Roots of Self-Awareness

“Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”

-Abraham Lincoln

Have you ever heard the saying “Your reputation precedes you?” This is based on what others may have heard about you before they actually have a chance to meet you. This can be either positive or negative which can lead to preconceived perceptions as to who a person truly is. My only advice is to keep an open mind and try not to let any gossip or rumors cloud your own judgment on someone.

A shadow is that perception while the tree is its actual reality. As we know shadows change or shift their positioning throughout the day as the day progresses much like people’s perceptions of us can change based on depending on how the light is shining on us when it comes to certain circumstances.

A tree on the other hand establishes roots deep within the soil and withstands the ever changing seasons which are in fact the everyday challenges we face in life. It is who we actually are, our true self. We understand ourselves through our own thoughts and emotions and how we fit in in the world around us. The greater we are in becoming more self aware the greater the strength of our roots are.

Always remember like the tree and its shadow are connected so are your character and reputation. By tending to the roots of your character on a daily basis will help project a positive shadow of your reputation. You want your reputation to precede you in a positive light and not a negative one.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
