When reading today’s quote you might automatically associate with having control over ourselves with the area of self-management and you would be correct. But like most of the areas within Social Emotional Learning often times they are able to be applied to multiples examples. So for this particular quote it is solely focused on relationship skills and how we can better maintain a healthy relationship with ourselves.
Often times when we talk about relationships skills we discuss how it applies to another person or a group of people and maintaining those healthy relationships. There is one relationship I do not want us to forget and it is even more important than the ones we have with others: it is the relationship with ourselves. If we don’t take time to love ourselves then how can we truly love someone else?
I know all too well I am my own worst critic. I’ve always found ways to knock myself down when I’ve made a mistake and did a lot of negative self talk in my early to mid 20’s. I’m not proud of the fact I’ve actually made this into a work of art over time but I can say that over the past several years I am working daily to changing this.
In our relationships with our friends, work colleagues and our own family we try to project trust, respect, love and have an open dialogue with them. We need to give that same grace and compassion to ourselves. It is important that we trust ourselves that we will do our best to always make responsible decisions but realize that if we slip up not to let this ultimately break that sense of trust. Self-respect goes hand and hand with the trust factor. Again if you don’t respect yourself how can you respect anybody else? Love goes without saying and this should always be unconditional. Having open dialogue with yourself is crucial as you want to make sure you are providing yourself with positive self talk and words of encouragement especially when you are going through stressful moments. Just remember to be intentional in making sure to give time to work on these areas for your own well being because you matter.
