Enjoy the Ride
“Let your joy be in your journey—not in some distant goal.”
Don’t wish your life away. Enjoy the moment while it lasts. You will be my age before you know it. These are statements that I heard all the time from my parents and grandparents whenever I told them I couldn’t wait to be an adult, go to college or be out on my own. Looking back I now see where they are coming from. Don’t get me wrong, everything that has brought me to where I am today I will be forever grateful and feel blessed. I have a beautiful family and a calling where I have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others by being an educator. But….there is something that I didn’t do that I’m trying to become better at: enjoying the ride. The ride of my life.
I’ve had pockets of where I can remember experiencing certain feelings of joy along the way but when I really think back to these moments specifically, this only occurred after I attained a certain goal: getting my first job or being accepted to college, getting married, becoming a father, etc. These are just some of the many proud moments I’ve experienced but I can honestly say I never took the time to fully process what it was that I was experiencing along the way because I was so preoccupied on achieving that goal at the end of the rainbow so to speak. I became more focused on the product and not the process. I regret this somewhat and now am making a more conscious effort in becoming more aware of things as they are happening in the moment, the emotions I am experiencing and what I learn from each experience.
Our moral compass is a continuous evolution of our well being that occurs through the experiences we encounter. It is important that we fully embrace this process and learn to enjoy things along the way: the good and the bad; both help us make us into who we are. Yes that is right. Even the bad. Because our moral compass is the continuous journey that we are all on, so we might as well enjoy the ride.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
