“The price of greatness is responsibility.”
Without a doubt this quote by Sir Winston Churchill, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II, was by far one of his most famous ones he ever said. You may have heard something similar said in the movie Spiderman when Uncle Ben tells Peter Parker (before he becomes Spiderman) that with great power comes great responsibility. But this was merely paraphrased from Winston Churchill’s original one.
We all have a choice to make: whether to strive for greatness or not. There is no in between. It is either one or the other. Winston Churchill knew that by choosing to strive for greatness that would be need to be ready and able to face any of life’s challenges that comes with it. For him this became true in the face the second world war in trying to defeat the Nazis and the rest of the Axis Powers. Although this quote came from this particular time in his life, it does not not mean it wasn’t something that helped him get to where we was before and after that period in his live. A belief like that is ingrained within all of us.
Winston Churchill’s decision to lead the United Kingdom as one of the military powers in hoping to free themselves under potential Nazi rule not only showed how much he was willing to shoulder this great responsibility but also led the Allied Powers which comprised of other nations that made up the Allied Powers. This also proved his willingness to add on the responsibility of others because of what he believed in.
Although we do not necessarily have the same role that Winston Churchill had, our price for greatness is our responsibility. We decide the lengths we will go to achieve greatness. If we are wanting to be a professional athlete in a particular sport it is our responsibility to work out hard, eat well and study that sport’s craft in order to even have a chance at reaching that level of greatness. We do the same in the profession we are in. If we choose to give minimal effort, we should expect no less than minimal results. It all comes down to how responsible we want to be. Responsible to make things we want them the way to be, responsible for our choices overall. We need to remember that whatever decision is made it not only affects you personally but those around you.
Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Tom Hanks and many others like Winston Churchill all made decisions that affected their level of greatness in them and others. This was either through attaining championships or Oscars as they were responsible for their play on the court or the stage which helped bring out the greatness in their teammates or co-stars. Responsibility is control. The question is do you want to achieve greatness and have control over your life? Do you want to help others bring out their greatness and help them to gain control of their own lives along the way? Then make the choice to be responsible in all that you do each and every day because there is greatness inside of you just waiting to be released.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
