Our Moral Compass Podcast (Episode 74): What Strength Does

Welcome to the Our Moral Compass Podcast. Each daily reading focuses on a different quote on how we can best apply it to our own moral compass and one of the five areas in Social Emotional Learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. What Strength Does

“Only strength can cooperate—weakness cannot cooperate, it can only beg.”

     As the saying goes, “Strength is in the eye of the beholder.” And in this case and within this quote that strength lies within us. It may be dormant and deep inside us but it is already there because the type of strength they are referring to has nothing to do with physical strength but rather focuses on our mental strength. Much like when we work out our physical muscles in the gym to increase our physical strength, we work out our mental muscles through the daily experiences and challenges we are faced with. Also, as dumbbells are being used as tools to increase our physical strength, we utilize certain attributes or qualities as tools to develop our mental strength. These attributes/qualities help  further develop our self awareness.

By recognizing our inner attributes/strengths and how they compliment one another and that they work together towards a common goal, we are able to further develop our own self confidence and self worth. For example if you have compassion for others, you develop a commitment and a sense of loyalty towards them.  If you are able to adapt to ever changing circumstances/experiences in your environment, you also project a great deal of endurance in achieving the task at hand.

To summarize, strengths can enhance our self awareness skills while weaknesses can detract from them. As the quote implies each weakness begs, which I think means in this context begs for assistance, which can have the tendency to pull the focus too much on the negative instead of the positive. This ultimately weighs down our growth in self awareness. We need to focus on things that we can control and build upon our strengths and it is only through this that we can reach our full potential.
