It’s Who You Are Surrounded By That Matters
“You can’t run a government from one single person. What instead matters is that leadership be about gathering around extraordinary individuals and getting the best out of them.”
Teamwork makes the dream work. I am sure we have all heard this phrase especially within businesses and schools. Today’s quote uses government as the example but I believe this is applicable to any groups or organizations, especially if you are seeking to help bring their best out of your group.
First and foremost by doing things in isolation or trying to do everything yourself within a group or organization does not build the capacity within the group and it ultimately can create certain barriers. For example, there most likely will be a communication breakdown and a misalignment on what the values or main objectives of the team are. This miscommunication can damage the relationship skills within the group and can further more stifle the growth of the team. It prevents them from engaging in collaborative learning opportunities to learn and grow from each one another, to learn what each other’s strengths are and better yet how their own strengths can compliment the team. There will be untapped resources that the leader will never know about because they never took the time to invest in finding this information out. From an outsider’s perspective, there will be a disconnect within the group and will be viewed as more of a top-down leadership approach instead of a bottom-top approach. And worse yet, unneeded conflict can ensue that further hurts the relationships within the group.
Anyone can be a leader within their organization and no one needs to have a title to be a leader. You just need to be an active listener and observer while thoroughly assessing what your group or organization needs in order to put the right pieces (in this case the right personnel) into place based on what the group’s vision or mission is. As the old adage says, “There is no “I” in Team.”
