“Life is a long lesson in humility.”
-James M. Barrie
Life is full of lessons. Some are short and some seem neverending. The key though is whether we learn from the lessons that life teaches us. Some are good ones and some are bad ones. And it should be the good ones that have an everlasting hold on how we conduct our lives. Scottish novelist and playwright, James M. Barrie, who famously wrote Peter Pan, reminds us that humility is a lesson that is continuously learned throughout our lives.
The word humility is not one that is often used as it was during Barrie’s time but it still holds an important meaning as we become more self aware as to who we are and how we conduct ourselves each and everyday. I like to look at the word of humility as one of being modest and not really being better than someone else but rather comfortable in who I am. I believe it can be an asset towards always trying to improve yourself in all areas of your life.
I realize I by no means am perfect (although I always try to be) and it is normal to become frustrated and angry when things in my life don’t always turn out the way I had hoped for. And that’s ok. I now know to learn from the lesson that that particular lesson has taught me and know what to do differently the next time when I am faced with a similar situation. Life is about the journey, its about the process. The process of becoming who I am meant to be. I have so much more to learn about myself and how I can contribute to making this world a better place. I also recognize that every time I fall I have the internal strength within my own soul and the courage to rise like a phoenix from the ashes full on knowing that although I may have failed in my attempt to do something in the long run there will be a better opportunity coming my way. It is not only what I believe, it’s what I know.
Each day brings another opportunity to learn more about myself and a lesson in humility. And I welcome it each and every day.
