True Intention of Democracy

“As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever difference from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy.”

-Abraham Lincoln

As we all know democracy is where common people hold political power and can rule with directly or through elected representatives.  It is all about providing equal opportunities to helping make laws, vote for leaders and most importantly for everyone to be protected by those same laws and rights that are put into place. I admire Abraham Lincoln’s quote in that there should be no imbalance between the people of our nation. We should all be treated as equal.

Why is that over 250 years later are we still not at a level of equal footing for all? Even with all that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, the LGBTQ and MeToo movements have done fighting for equality we are still having daily battles between opposing sides. Why? It’s a question that may never be answered. But I think if we took the time to really try and understand one another, the differing viewpoints and learn to allow people to just be themselves we’d live in a more cohesive society.

Until we can value and appreciate the diversity of others then we cannot truly call this nation a democracy. Equal means a level playing field. Then everyone has a fair chance at the game of life.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
