“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
Life is full of obstacles. There will always be something out there that will challenge us but as Martin Luther King, Jr reminds us in today’s quote we need to remember that along with these obstacles there are always options and choices out there to keep fighting the good fight. To never give up. To keep moving forward.
Dr. King provides us with multiple examples reminding us that we may be faced with changing our mode of getting somewhere and it although it may take longer to get there that that is ok as long as we keep moving onward. Each time we have a choice. He says if we are unable to fly to run. Flying would be the quickest way to get somewhere but if we are unable to, running would be the next best option. He then goes on to say if we cannot run to walk. Again you will still get where you are going although it will take longer. Slow and steady wins the race. Just ask the Tortoise from the fable Tortoise and the Hare.
He then gives the final example that if we can’t walk to crawl. When I look at the examples of each I came to two conclusions: one that is very obvious and one that was not so obvious. The first one is that no matter what just keep moving forward. Push through and if you can’t go through, go around. If you can’t go around, climb up and over that obstacle because as author Ryan Holiday points out throughout one of his books, The Obstacle is the Way. The second conclusion I came to is two fold. Yes you can stand still and do nothing which is a decision, that obstacle is still before you and is preventing you from growing and in a way stunts that growth within yourself that you are trying to seek. Another choice you have is to reverse course or in other words go backwards. I do not know about you but with my lack of coordination, to try and go backwards whether it is running, walking or crawling I would have less control. Have you ever tried to look backwards running or walking? It’s hard! Most times you will lose your balance and fall over. Its not a safe choice either for you or anyone that might be near you while attempting this.
Anyways, the point is, the best decision we can make is choosing to press on and move forward. There will always be darkness before the light. Life can be tough but so are you. Don’t give up. No matter the pathway we choose, as long as it is before us and not behind us we will make it through to the other side. We shall overcome as long as we continue to keep us in the driver’s seat of life and keep our gear shift in drive.
