Honesty Is The Best Policy

“Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.”

-Sigmund Freud

We have all heard the phrase “Honesty is the best policy.” Now we know this and what it means but the question is do we actually say and model this every single time? Most likely not depending on what we are having to be honest about. In simplest terms it is not only speaking the truth but acting truthfully.

This totally embodies the concept of self awareness in that we have the ability to recognize our own thoughts and emotions as to what we are being honest about. Could it also fall into self management by what we do and what we say, yes but for the purpose of today’s discussion we will stick to self awareness. Through this recognition we are able to accurately assess each of our decisions through our own self confidence in trusting our own judgement on what we are being honest about. At the same time we should be optimistic in what we are speaking/acting honestly about and that our reasoning for being honest is in the best interest and the right thing to do for all parties involved.

Remember being honest from the start, no matter what feelings may get hurt along the way is always best. Many times if we lie about something, the truth always has a way of coming out eventually and most often will hurt others even more so than if you had just been honest in the first place. This may result in developing mistrust and damage the relationship between you and the individual or group affected. As Spencer Johnson once said, “Integrity is telling my truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.”

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
