Our Choices Matter
“It is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices.”
-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
When we look at what reveals to the world as to who we really are often times many think it has to do with the skills or abilities that we acquire along this journey we call life. Some of these may include but are not limited to: being dependable, adaptable, motivational, and problem solver. Although these type of abilities are great ones to have but do not truly define who we are. It truly and whole heartedly comes down to the choice we make.
Today’s quote reminds us of this and when you really think about it, how did we acquire those abilities? It was through the choices and decisions that we made. Each experience we go through presents us with a situation that we need to assess and thoroughly analyze by figuring out what would be the positive and negative consequences of our decisions. We all have choices to make. Very rarely does someone just set out to live their life as a criminal as it came to choices they made that led them down this dark path. The same goes for those that decide to be a doctor or teacher and wanting to help people. Choices were made that led them toward these specific pathways.
But one thing I want us to remember is even when we make a bad decision or choice this does not solely reveal who we are. It would have to be made up of several bad choices that would then snowball towards a point of no return to truly define us. If, after a poor decision is made, we need to take the time to reflect upon what we learned from it. Did we damage a relationship with this decision? How can we make things right? What would need to be changed in the future when faced with this type of decision again? These are just some things that we need to take the time to do in life because if we don’t, we are bound to make the same mistakes again, which can then lead to defining who we truly are.
Don’t rush your decisions. We have an ethical and moral responsibility to ourselves and others, to take the time to throughly assess each situation and make the best decision or choice while considering the well being of ourselves and others.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your responsible decision making skills?
