Our Moral Compass: What Ignorance Brings About

“Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge.”

-Charles Darwin

Ignorance. We’ve heard such sayings like “ignorance is bliss” or “ignorance breeds arrogance.” And in today’s quote by English naturalist and biologist Charles Darwin he states that by being ignorant brings about confidence more so than it does knowledge. Before we look at this quote let’s review what ignorance is: Ignorance is a lack of knowledge, understanding, education or for today’s blog’s purpose: awareness.

In my humble opinion I do not believe ignorance is a good thing at all. Yes it causes you to unknowingly know of things that go on around you which can help you avoid certain things but I believe all it really does is bring about a sense of denial as to what is happening in the world around you. I think it blinds you to what is really going on in the world and can cause unnecessary pain and distress. I also contend that ignorance only brings about confidence because you are only basing your perceptions and judgment solely on what you know and do not have any outside knowledge to bring forth any reason to change your way of thinking.

To me knowledge is what brings out the confidence in us because we have factual information on a topic that we have either read or researched about and not just basing it on our opinion, the opinion of others like we see in social media. Look at what has happened recently in our world. Many of us have been ignorant to what has been happening to blacks for years and what they are still having to overcome since slavery was abolished years ago. I admit that my ignorance had gotten the best of me and I am now making strides to combat this by educating myself more in this area to better support blacks and other races, genders, etc in order to be a part of the change that is so desperately needed.

Knowledge is power only if it is applied. Ignorance is a weakness. The choice is clear.   Dr. Martin Luther King Jr once said, “Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.” If you want to be more self aware and afford yourself the opportunity to trust your own judgment on important topics, then educate yourself.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
