What Is Love?
“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.”
Although our moral compass is made up of the five areas of Social Emotional Learning: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making there is one entity I believe is at the heart of it all and makes these areas function together as one. And that entity is love.
Today’s quote comes at the right time and reminds us that no matter what challenges may be thrown our way we will, together, rise above through love. Love needs no introduction but we may need a friendly reminder from time to time what it means and the true power that it holds. I believe that time is needed more now than ever.
Love is that intense feeling of deep affection through showing a great interest and pleasure in something. In today’s quote Maya Angelou reminds that love has no barriers. In essence it will do whatever is necessary to reach its destination of providing hope to others. No matter what pitfalls it may come across, love will not quit and is something that each one of us possesses deep within us.
Love also brings people closer together. Although we are in a current state of social distancing, this pandemic is something that we are all facing and experiencing at the same time. It does not take into account what our gender, race, belief system or social status is. We are all in same boat and I think this really is our chance to use love for one another to help us get through this dark time.
We shall overcome this current challenge if we keep our love for one another at the forefront and let love be our guide in reaching that destination of hope. In the Star Wars Movie Rogue One, one of its main characters, Jyn Erso, makes a statement to the small band of Rebels that she leads with the odds stacked against them: “Rebellions are built on hope.” I believe this is a time for us to build our own rebellion of hope. Its our resistance to letting this virus affect us not only physically but mentally. We will not let this affect our moral compass.
This socially distancing has affected our work and home life. It has kept us physically from the ones we love: our friends and family. But through the grace of technology in platforms like Zoom, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter we are able to still stay connected, inspire one another and most importantly be there to encourage one another. We may not realize it but those actions are all acts of love. We are using love to go around those barriers, jump hurdles and penetrate walls. As we continue to learns ways to overcome, we unknowingly, are leading with love and providing hope to one another.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
