Does It Matter Who Gets The Credit?
“If you worry about who is going to get credit, you don’t get much work done.”
Have you ever worked hard on a project within a team you were on and although it turned out well when it came time for that acknowledgment all of the credit was given to one person or the team lead? I’m sure this has happened to you because I know it has has happened several times to me throughout my life. I often was left frustrated and dejected because I wanted that recognition too because I knew I had contributed to the success of that project or projects. When I look back at how I reacted in those situations the question I kept coming back to was did it really matter? The answer for me was no.
I want you to think back to times that this happened to you when you didn’t receive the credit you righteously deserved. This does not necessarily happen because of a team project because this can happen when you and only worked a project and it resulted on huge gains or profits for your company or organization and it can still have the same result in you not receiving that recognition.
I’ve got a question for you: what was the purpose or true intent of you working on solving that problem or challenge that you or your team faced? Was it all about who received the credit for it? Or was it about the process you were apart of, the teamwork you may have engaged in, the growth in yourself and your team that resulted from it and how it helped whomever benefited from the problem being solved? As you can see one side of the coin shows that just having the goal of who should get the credit is very shallow and limited. The other side of that coin moves beyond that narrow mindedness way of thinking and provides multiple benefits that reach far beyond who receives the credit.
An important component of self management is regulating our thoughts, emotions and behaviors in all situations and this one is no different. Remember we should always be doing things to benefit others, not ourselves. Think about what individuals or groups are doing to raise money for our nation’s food banks and health care workers or are taking the time to create more masks to help them take care of those suffering from COVID 19. They are not concerned with who gets the recognition because that is not what matters. As Jon Gordon and Daniel Decker state on one of the pages within their book Stay Positive is, “Do it for the cause, not the applause.” If we can do this we will be in a better place in managing ourselves,
