Definition of Success
What is success? I think it is a mixture of having a flair for the thing that you are doing; knowing that is not enough, that you have got to have hard work and a certain sense of purpose.”
If there was anyone who knew the meaning of success and was a prime example of it was the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. She was not only the longest serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century but also the first female ever to hold that position. She believed it was our own duty to look after ourselves first, then our neighbors and realize that we should not be looking at things we think we are entitled to receiving without looking at truly what are obligations actually are. She was very self aware as to who she actually was had such a strong confidence in her own abilities that she believed she could succeed in any given situation.
In today’s quote her definition of success has nothing to do with hitting some sort of magic number or someone else’s judgment to determine if you are successful or not. She refers to it as having a mixture of flair for the thing that we are doing. In other words it is the innate ability and passion or drive to do what we do best. If it is to teach we teach. If it is dealing with numbers it might be an accountant. Or if it is fighting for others rights it could be an activist. Whatever it may be, once you recognize the passion, hunger and desire to know what you want out of life and will stop at nothing to make sure you reach that pinnacle, you will truly reach that high level of success.
Margaret Thatcher said that success was more than just made up of having flair for something. It was beyond just recognizing it as it was necessary for us to work hard with that certain level of purpose in order to truly experience success. I know as an educator I try to reach that high level of success each and everyday and it is what drives me to get better and better in my craft. What serves as that special spark or flair in your life to helps to drive you to your own definition of success.
Remember that success is also not measured by how much money you make either. Money can only bring you temporary happiness along with a temporary feeling of success. Why? Because money is an inanimate object. Our feelings, thoughts and emotions are not. They are real and is something we can always have control on and no one else really can unless we let them. We set the bar for determining what success means for us and only us. We hold ourselves to whatever that standard should be because it is what we want, we desire. Once we recognize that we hold that power, then achieving success is within reach.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
