Our Moral Compass: Stay Positive

“Stay positive. While you can’t always control your circumstances, you can control how you respond.”

-Daniel Decker

This past winter Jon Gordon and Daniel Decker released a book called Stay Positive that has a plethora of Positive quotes and sayings that can help anyone turn around a negative day into a positive one. I have already read this book and actually implement it into a daily Stay Positive Message for Today message that I send out to my staff but also the Twitter universe (which includes our Cotee River families) to encourage them to Stay Positive even when we aren’t going through a pandemic or equity issues. I typically had done this only on the morning news but since we had distance learning for the remainder of last school year I took to recording myself and posting it. I have received wonderful feedback from staff, families and even those from other schools saying they look forward to these and it helps start their day off on the right foot.

Daniel Decker’s encourages this in today’s quote that to stay positive and realize that we can’t control our circumstances all the time but we do have control over ourselves and how we respond to those circumstances. This, above anything else in my humble opinion is at the heart of what self management is all above. If we do not learn to regulate our own emotions, thoughts and behaviors then how can we expect to have much control over anything else?

Once we learn to separate from the idea that we have control over outside circumstances, we can do a better job working on controlling ourselves and our reaction to things which will in turn help with that self management piece. We all have the ability to do this but we just have to actually work at it to do it right.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
