Our Moral Compass: It All Starts With A Compelling Vision

“All leaders have the capacity to create a compelling vision, one that takes people to a new place, and then to translate that vision into reality.”

-Warren Bennis

Self Awareness. That innate ability to accurately recognize how our thoughts and values influence behavior. It gives us a well grounded sense of confidence, optimism and a growth mindset. To me, this entire process we all go through helps us to create that compelling vision that American scholar, organizational consultant and author Warren Bennis refers to in today’s quote. He is often credited with creating a compelling vision as it pertains to the contemporary field of Leadership studies.

Vision in its simplest term is “the big picture.” It’s what is at the end of our own rainbow and what will hopefully fulfill our own destiny and quite possibly influence others to be a part of that vision and eventually develop and fulfill their own. Our vision is what defines us as to what we want to be and what we want to be known for. It provides us a map to chart out our course, what goals we want to achieve along the way and when to check in and evaluate our progress allowing us to adjust our sails along the way. It is in a sense our own compass that helps to guide our decision making. It ultimately transforms you.

We have all been a part of the vision making process whether it was our own or someone else’s. It is not always limited to just work related vision as it can be for family or even for personal visions. When I was younger I had a vision of one day having a family, a house and job of my own. Fortunately for me that vision has become a reality but it did not just happen over night. It was definitely a process and one that was shaped through realizing what I did and did not want when it came to starting a family. The same type of process is done for other personal and professional ones.

Like Warren Bennis said we all have a the capacity to create a compelling vision. We just need to be aware of what we really want out of life and take the necessary steps to make our vision become a reality. This comes from a well thought out plan and making the time and devotion to that vision and when warranted, having others become a part of that vision. Sometimes in order to achieve it, it will take a team effort. Vision starts with its creator and will never die so long as someone believes in it. What compelling vision are you trying to create? How will it positively impact yourself and possibly the lives of others?

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
