Find The Time
“No matter how busy a person’s day may be if they really care, they will always find time for you.”
Time. It’s official definition is the indefinite continued progress of existence and events that occur in an apparently irreversible succession from the past, through the present, into the future. Some words that stand out to me are indefinite, which is an unknown length of time and irreversible, which is not able to be undone or altered.
Time is so precious that I believe we forget this often and it only becomes relevant when someone we love or care about unexpectedly passes away. All of a sudden we feel that sense of urgency to do the things we have always intended to do or say the things were were meaning to say for the longest time. Unfortunately as time goes on, we forget this and fall back into old habits saying to ourselves: I’ll do that later or I’ll call that person later. And the sad thing is we never do. We need to realize that time is not on our side and for the purpose of today’s blog our relationships depend on us give them the time they so desperately need.
Today’s quote essentially highlights that no matter how busy we are, we need to find the time for others. This past week I lost a good friend unexpectedly who I had worked with that I hadn’t spoken to in a couple of years. It was really no one’s fault, life just happened. We both have families and are family men who try to put their needs first before anyone else. By no means are we perfect in attempting to do this but we give it our best effort.
As I attended his service the other day, like often times happens to all us all, memories come rushing forward of all the good times we had had, and I remembered the impact he had had on my life. It also made me regret that we did not stay in touch like we said we would and I realized that these well meant intentions happens more often than not with others who I have known and we have said the same words: “We will stay in touch” and we never do as time once again gets the best of us.
The only argument that I have against this quote that stands out to me is “if you really care” because I did care just like I cared about my Dad when I unexpectedly lost him as well. And I know both of them cared about me so that part of our relationships was never in doubt. I just need to make sure that I use the time I have left on this earth to let those I love and care about know how much they mean to me and intentionally carve out time for them by either giving them a phone call or stopping by to visit them just to check in on them. When making our daily to do lists, we should put on it, at least one person we have spoken to in a while and reach out to them and check on their well being. Let them know how much they mean to you and make up that lost time by giving them some of your own personal time. You will be glad you did.
Every relationship impacts us in some way and helps to make us into who we are today. I realize this now more than ever and we need to take advantage of the time to let those we love know this. So as you read this, whether we have ever officially met or not, we have a relationship, a connection. I love and appreciate you. There is a reason for our connection and I am blessed that our paths have crossed. And for that I am forever grateful.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
