Keep Your Eyes on the Prize
“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal.”
Distractions. They are and will always be out there trying to prevent us from maintaining focus in whatever we are trying to accomplish. And there are times that these distractions can have life changing consequences if we are entrapped by them.
One of the best examples that comes to mind is texting and driving. This has been one of our biggest distractions for several years now and doesn’t limit itself to a certain age bracket as all ages levels are guilty of doing it. As we all know the main purpose of us driving is to get from one place to another. There are so many things we need to pay attention to from the time we turn on the car along with decisions to be made: things like do I pull forward or backward? Are there people around? Do you go left or right out of your development? Are you taking the expressway or the back roads? What is the speed limit? I can go on and on but you get the point. Lots of decisions to be made and a lot of focus is required which we take for granted and can become focused on a device that will take away from that focus. From the time we have taught our daughter to drive she knows to keep the phone in the glove compartment and focus on the road. We tell her the texts, instagram posts, etc will be there to look at once she arrives a her destination and has turned off her vehicle. Now if we could get others to follow suit there would be less unnecessary tragedies due to texting and driving.
Henry Ford’s quote reminds us to avoid distractions as they will try to knock us off course in life and can distract us from achieving our goals. Other examples of distractions are binge watching Netflix when you should be fixing that deck that has needed fixing for several years or scrolling through your social media pages instead of writing that term paper. Now to be clear, not all distractions are bad. Sometimes when you are feeling sad or angry, a funny Youtube video or doing some meditation can be helpful and as long as we determine a time limit can help us to recharge that focus to complete a certain task. It just comes down to time management but that is a subject for another time.
We have control over our own thoughts, behaviors and actions. We always have and always will. We have the ability to keep our eyes focused on the prize and the goals we want to achieve in our lives. It might be a good idea to come up with a sort of game plan that you write down in a journal or something of what steps you will take to keep you focused on the task at hand and what you will do when certain distractions start to creep in. If Henry Ford had let his distractions get the best of him, his revolutionizing the auto industry by designing an assembly line of production to produce more vehicles who never have taken place and we would not have the unlimited options to purchasing different styles/models of cars like we do today.
We may not be the next Henry Ford but we do have the potential to be the the first of whatever we want to become. It is up to us to get there so put those blinders on and keep yourself as financial expert, Chris Hogan says each time someone asks him how he is doing, “I am focused and not finished.” So stay focused because you are far from being finished from chasing your dreams and we cannot afford to let anything stop us.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
