The By-Product of Happiness
“Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities.”
Happiness. It is something we all strive to have in our lives. The important things to remember is no matter how much money you possess, no matter how much of the infer things in life you possess, none of it and I mean none of it will ever bring you long lasting happiness. Noticed I said long lasting. Those things can only bring you temporary happiness.
Today’s quote by English writer and philosopher Aldous Huxley reminds us that if we are always seeking happiness, we perhaps will never find it as it is not something that can be easily captured by one particular instance but by many that roll up into one. True happiness is that feeling that just embraces you, letting you know how good life is for you right now in that moment when all you can really do is just smile. That is happiness.
If you think about it I am sure when you have experienced those moments of pure happiness. You’ve become aware of what those feelings are like as you experience life. It is where, in a sense, you wish that you could capture that particular moment, put in a bottle, seal it and save it for a time when you may really need it. Like Huxley suggests, happiness can be something that occurs as a result of several great things that have gone your way. But I think there is something more to it than just being a by-product of other activities as it can just be the moment itself that you are experiencing like the birth of a child or seeing someone you love get married. To me there is no by product for those examples. What you see and what you experience is where the happiness comes from. And it comes from you and your own thoughts and emotions. You give happiness its power.
There is one thing that I believe can bring forth happiness each and everyday and that is gratitude. When we are thankful for all the wonderful things that have come into our lives how can that not make us happy? If we take a moment each day, whether it be at the beginning of end of it, and think of what we are grateful for I can pretty much guarantee this an instant ticket to daily happiness. And when we are happy we become more motivated to do other things that may ourselves happy and once we can get that momentum going the sky’s the limit. You don’t have to wait for happiness to come knocking on your door. Just realize that you actually are in control over your own happiness and it is up to you to keep it. So what is the by-product of happiness? It is us becoming a better person and spreading that happiness onto others.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
