What We Should Really Be Curious About
“Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.”
Have you ever wondered why we have the tendency to sometimes focus on the wrong things in life and ignore the things we should be focusing on? French-Polish physicist Marie Curie’s quote is one that definitely peaked my interest when I first read it and it was mostly because I respectively disagree with her perspective. I believe in order to fully understand someone’s ideas you need to really understand the person who is the creator of them because in knowing and learning more about them you have the chance to embrace their ideas even more.
Please don’t misunderstand me. Everyone has a certain amount of curiosity about ideas: where they came from and what its benefits might be. Its definitely a conversational piece no doubt but to me in order to really dig deep to discover the why behind the idea you really need to tune into who that person is, what they value, and what is important to them. Learning about someone’s perspective or seeing it through their eyes is something we often overlook and take the ideas presented at face value.
When we allow ourselves to become more socially aware, utilizing our empathetic and active listening skills to someone else’s ideas this opens any doors towards having a deep and engaging conversation. It allows you to probe a little deeper and ask them thought provoking questions that get to the heart of “the why” behind their idea and like I mentioned earlier, who they are as a person.
I honestly believe you have to be curious about the person and their idea simultaneously. You cannot look at one without the other. Its a package deal. We need to stop and become invested in others more both in who they are and what they are all about. If we can do this we can gain better insight overall. I cannot think of a greater benefit than that.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
