Be Wise

To have peace with this peculiar life; to accept what we do not understand; to wait calmly for what awaits us, you have to be wiser than I am.”

-M. C. Escher

Graphic artist M. C. Escher’s quote serves as a reminder to us that in order to truly be wise and have peace in this life the only thing we can truly control is ourselves. No matter what age and no matter how much time we have on this planet we will never acquire all of the knowledge that is out there nor will we understand it all. We can either be upset about this fact or learn to accept it and move on. For me I accept what I may not ever understand and feel that whatever I do understand about the world in my lifetime, then that was what was meant to be.

We’ve heard the saying that good things come to those that wait. Is it hard to do this? Most certainly. Does it mean then that is all we can do is just wait? No. I don’t think so. I believe we are responsible to make certain things happen and that things rarely just fall in our lap without making it happen. Case in point for me is I finished writing a book back in April and now am pursuing to get someone to either be a literary agent for it or actually publish it. I have written numerous of what are called query letters to various agencies to “pitch” my book proposal in the hopes that someone will take a chance on me. It takes an average of 4-8 weeks to even get a response if you are lucky. They even let let you know you might not hear back from them at all. I could have just sent one query letter and waited for the one response but to put all my eggs in one basket would in my opinion be crazy. So I have sent over 30 of them with more to come. I could easily wait for that first one to come back but I’ve been raised to leave no stone unturned and since there is no guarantee I press on. Yes I am waiting calmly for something to happen but I’d like to think of it more as I am actively waiting since I am continuing to send more letters out. For me that is the wiser choice. Besides next on my list is to do the same thing with writing these letters for the book publishers too. I can’t and won’t give up.

I’d like to think in both accepting what I do not understand and choosing to wait calmly for what awaits me I try to exhibit that best self management tactics I know how. I think through daily practice in the areas of self control, stress management, self discipline and self motivation I can, in fact have that peace in my life that I so desperately want to have. I realize however that if it is to be it is up to me.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
