“If you want to make enemies, try to change something.”
People that avoid change are not necessarily fans of those who invoke that change. It’s even harder if they work for them or are within their organization. President Woodrow Wilson once said that the way to make enemies is to try and change something. So why do we avoid or resist change? Often it is due to our fear of the unknown, that there doesn’t seem to be anything in particular that we might benefit from the change, and mistrust. Each can have a damaging affect on our relationships with others. Ways in which to avoid making enemies is ensuring that there is clear communication with others that change is not only coming but why it is necessary. Being upfront and honest with them is important as this will also alleviate any feelings of mistrust too. Often times one does not see what the benefit of the change might be because it doesn’t necessarily affect them directly but rather affects the organization as a whole. The thing is that although change may not at first directly affect you, it can over time if you let it and give that change a chance. Remember that change does not mean things will always be a negative but that it can bring forth a positive change for the better too.
I believe change can only make people become enemies when we lead in secrecy and not in truth. So in order to make our relationships stronger we need to be much more forthcoming with one another as to why change is needed. Without change an organization can become stagnant, our relationships with one another can become stagnant too. We need to be mindful of this and act accordingly that will benefit all in the long run.
