Where Our Calling Is Formed
“In the midst of the challenge is where your calling is formed.”
Throughout our lives challenges will always stand in our way but like a phoenix we will rise and overcome them. I’m sure of it as long as we believe in ourselves and in our ability. Motivational speaker Inky Johnson’s quote resonates with me so much because I sincerely believe that as we go through certain challenges our true calling in life comes together. His story is a powerful one where he turned a devastating injury into his calling for providing inspiration to others that you can make the turn the impossible into the possible.
On Sept. 9, 2006 Inky Johnson, while playing cornerback for the University of Tennessee football team went to make a routine tackle on an opposing player. The contact with them resulted in Inky busting a subclavian artery in his chest and tearing his shoulder ligaments. Unfortunately as it turns out that that injury caused his right arm to be paralyzed and he almost lost his life due to other injuries. His hopes and dreams of an NFL career were no more. Many would have thrown in the towel bu he did not. Inky used this challenge and repurposed his life. He decided to pursue his masters degree in sports psychology and even wrote a book about his faith and perseverance that occurred throughout his journey of recovery and self discovery.
Inky Johnson never planned on being a motivational speaker but knew that his mission was to inspire others and change people’s lives. He eventually began giving over 250 talks per year encouraging others to persevere and paying if forward to the next person. He shares his experiences in the hopes of giving back to the world and giving back to humanity. Inky had people inspire him when he was growing up and he just wants to do the same fo others. His story is example of someone who has a strong moral compass.
We all have our calling in life that is formed through either one single challenge in our lives or through multiple challenges. Each of our stories are different but I wholeheartedly believe that if we live each day with purpose and intentionality in helping others in their time of need we are answering the bell of our true calling. I know for me that has been an educator. This has had its challenges along the way but if I did not persevere and overcome certain aspects within those challenges, Social Emotional Learning would never had crossed my path and brought me to where I am today. My calling to help and inspire others continues to evolve through my daily blog, podcast, Positive Messages and other writings. I believe through it all that it has helped me to spread the our moral compass message that we can impact the world by us taking action in being the change we wish to see in the world.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
