Exhibiting Excellence In All We Do
“Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.”
If there is ever an individual that knows what and how to exhibit excellence it is former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Not only was he the first African American to hold that position between 2001 and 2005 he also was a retired four-star General for the United States Army. His record speaks for itself. In today’s quote he refers to excellence is not something that can be excluded when talking about an individual but it is the attitude that that person exemplifies that makes that characteristic shine through.
While it is important to make the decision to exhibit excellence in all that we do and it is something that is within our control, it all comes down to that belief or self awareness that it is something that is already instilled within each of us. It is further developed as our self confidence grows in trusting one’s own abilities, qualities and judgment no matter how high the stakes are in that particular person’s world. For Colin Powell between 1989 and 1993 he further exhibited this excellence as the Joint Chief of Staff position within the Department of Defense. This was the highest position for this department and occurred during the Gulf War in the early 1990’s. He formulated the Powell Doctrine which limited American military action unless it satisfied certain criteria regarding American national security interests, overwhelming force, and widespread public support. Each of his moves were always calculated, well thought out and just.
Powell further exhibited this through his own belief in his ability to succeed in different situations and within the different positions he held. He always was very calm, cool and collected when speaking to the press which calmed our nation during a very stressful time of war. Each of us has the potential and capability to also exhibit this high level of excellence in all that we do. This, however, is not just limited to what is done at work but also within our homes as well. We always need to bring our “A Game” to each of the arenas of our lives because we have people that depend on us. We need to realize what strengths we bring to the table and use those to better ourselves. The end result will be one that will raise everyone’s belief system in one another.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards improving your self awareness?
