Let Kindness Lead the Way
“Nothing can make our life, or the lives of other people, more beautiful than perpetual kindness.”
Let’s face it. Life can be very complicated. Sometimes it is due to things that are out of our control and other times it is because of our own doing. And lately between all the political and cultural strife going on the world there is one thing that can help us rise above: kindness. Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate to others. It is something that not only makes the other person that is on the receiving end of your kindness feel better about themselves but it makes you feel good too. In today’s quote Russian writer Leo Tolstoy reminds that life can be beautiful if we project never ending or changing acts of kindness towards others.
When we are authentically kind we in a sense are projecting the best version of ourselves to others. This will more than likely leave them with memorable impression of who you are. In effort to become more socially aware and empathize with others I feel that acts of kindness are needed now more than ever. A few years back The Huffington Post wrote about 10 ways we can all be more kind:
1. When you believe in someone, tell them directly. Convey your support to them.
2. Consider kindness before you speak.
3. Spread kindness that you have received.
4. Be mindful of how you treat others.
5. Don’t discriminate who to be kind to.
6. Set an example.
7. Practice good intentions.
8. Feel good about it.
9. Reach out when it is less likely others will.
10. Try to be kind every day.
All of these are important reminders on how we can all be kind and are all connected to one another. The one I want to highlight as it pertains to social awareness is #5: Don’t discriminate who to be kind to. The one thing we need to be mindful of is that each of us is facing a challenge, whether it is seen or unseen. We should never discriminate who to be kind to, despite the differences we may have with them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion or belief. We may not agree with them but that is something out of our control and shouldn’t lead to us to being discriminatory to another. We are better than that as long as we let kindness lead the way.
What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards becoming more socially aware?
