Our Moral Compass: Our Most Important Relationship

“One of the lovely things about us as individuals is the incommensurable in us. In each person, there is a point of absolute non-connection with everything else and with everyone. This is fascinating and frightening. It means that we cannot continue to seek outside ourselves for things we need from within. The blessings for which we hunger are not found in other places or people. These gifts can only be given to you by yourself. They are at home at the hearth of your soul.”

-John O’Donohue

We all judge ourselves by different standards on how we live each and every day as well as conduct ourselves in life: by our own standards. We have the tendency to focus on the relationships around us instead of the relationship within us. In today’s quote Irish poet John O’Donohue reminds us of this that we there are sometimes in life that the things we may be searching for in order to truly complete us do not necessary come from the outside but rather from the inside.

Let’s face it. We are vulnerable and that is ok. Life can be be exciting but also scary at the same time. There are periods of uncertainty of how things will turn out but that is something that is our of our control. To try and seek validation from others is ok once and a while but the person you should really be seeking validation from is yourself. As O’Donohue reiterates, we all possess certain gifts and these gifts can and should be given by us for us. People can tell us over and over how special we are but until we actually believe it ourselves it won’t matter much.

The greatest connection we can have is a connection with ourselves. It is the one that can become the deepest, the most reliable. If you can’t trust yourself, how can your trust others? Take a moment and think of all the blessings that you have. Yes there are ones that come from others being in your life but they also come from what what you value most about others and what you value about yourself. So make sure you take the time each day to fill your heat and soul with a deep love for yourself and who you are. When you have a strong relationship with yourself, you are able to have a strong one with others.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards developing your relationship skills?
