Our Moral Compass: More Than Just Art

“Art is a guaranty of sanity.”

-Louise Bourgeois

French-American artist Louise Bourgeois’ quote today focuses on art being what helps certify or guarantee our sanity which I believe essentially depicts the importance of maintaining our mental health and well being. Art, as we know is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination. This is done through drawing, painting or sculpturing. It is a way of expressing ourselves and also helps us alleviate the stresses of everyday life. Growing up I had always enjoyed coloring in coloring books as a way of calming myself whenever I felt overwhelmed or stressed out about something.

In addition to art helping to alleviate stress and encourage thinking it can boost our self esteem, help us become a better student in any field that interests us as well as increase our brain plasticity. It also improves not only our mental health but our physical health as well. Most importantly, it creates a deeper sense of empathy towards ourselves and towards others which I feel is something we need a little more of nowadays.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
