This Is A Work Of Art

“To be agreeable while disagreeing—-that’s an art.”

-Malcolm Forbes

Let’s just agree to disagree. Have you ever heard that phrase before? I’m sure we all have at one time or another. This is usually said after two people engaged in a healthy debate let us say with no clear “winner.” American entrepreneur and former publisher of Forbes magazine Malcolm Forbes said that being agreeable while disagreeing is itself an art. And you know what? He was right. To me to have this sense of self discipline when we can be so opinionated is truly an art.

To control our impulses and not react and say something negatively to someone who believes differently from us is something that is a difficult thing to do. I know it was not always easy for me to do this when I was younger but it has, over time been much more manageable for me in controlling those impulses. The thing that I realized is that I can only control what I can control: and that is me. I can’t control others or the situation itself but I can control how I react to things.

I believe that is what Malcolm Forbes is trying to express in today’s quote. When we learn to let bygones be bygones life is just better and we will be better for it. There is no reason for us to ever lose our cool over things that are out of our control and that includes when we disagree with one another. If we realize sometimes no matter how hard we try and want to convince the other person that we are right it isn’t worth it if it means getting into an argument. We need to learn to keep things in perspective. Sometimes it is ok to agree to disagree as long as we do not lose our cool in the process.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards managing yourself better?
