Our Moral Compass: Our Character Above All Else

“What we know matters but who we are matters more.”

-Brene’ Brown

If you were to look up the official definition of the word character you would see that it is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. In today’s quote by Author, Speaker and Podcaster Brene’ Brown she reminds us that who we are as a person is above all else of utmost importance, even when it comes to what we know. I can’t think of anything more meaningful than character. It really is who we are as a person and how we want to be remembered by our friends and loves ones.

On trans4mind.com by Dr. Alan Zimmerman he wrote an article on How To Develop Your Character. Within in it he mentions that in order to have character we must have the right values, do the right thing (even when no one is looking) and being the right kind of person when different situations present itself, both good and bad. He concludes his article with listing 8 ways in which to build strong character:

1. DECIDE to be self-supporting.

2. SEEK continual education.

3. SPREAD kindness.

4. WORK on yourself.

5. PURSUE excellence.

6. ADD value.

7. PRACTICE persistence.

8. DETERMINE to be determined.

Remember life is a process and so is building and strengthening our character, our own moral values. To me this is essential towards living a full and fruitful life.

What does this quote mean to you and how can you apply today’s message towards defining/refining your own moral compass?
